Pause Before You Build.

AI can get you to confidence faster than your brain can get to understanding. A pause is where information becomes usable.

AI lets a single person do what used to require a team

You have a personal tutor for any topic. You can research, prototype and ship. But none of it has made our brains faster.

AI helps us process information. It's a tutor, a rubber duck and a sparring partner. It helps you reach understanding you'd struggle to get to alone. The tools are good at helping you think.

They haven't closed the gap, though. The input exploded. Our ability to absorb, connect and retain it didn't keep up. The rabbit hole got deeper and branched into a maze.

The false summit

When I deep-dive into a new domain or framework, I hit the Dunning-Kruger peak in hours instead of weeks. It's the false summit where you feel you understand something because you can talk about it fluently. One good session and you're ready to build. That confidence is the dangerous part. It used to take long enough to get there that you'd often correct yourself on the way. Now you can arrive before lunch and start building in the afternoon.

The discipline I've had to learn is stopping

The tools aren't wrong. My brain just hasn't finished sorting what they gave me. So I step away and think about something else. The back of my mind connects the new ideas to what I already know. It surfaces the contradictions I glossed over and separates what I understood from what I only came across. Then I come back. That cycle is what makes understanding stick, and it doesn't run at the speed of a context window.

You can follow any path further and faster than before. But speed through a maze isn't progress. Knowing when to stop and let the map form is what turns information into something you can build on.

This matters most in product work

Agents let you research a market, synthesise findings and prototype solutions faster than any team could a few years ago. They can't build empathy with the people you're solving for. Knowing a domain well enough to talk about it is different from knowing the people who live in it.

Here, AI is most useful for getting me to the starting line faster. It gives me enough fluency in a new field to ask good questions of the people who've spent years there. Not to replace the conversation, but to earn it.
